Gin Rickey

Gin · Highball

Created by Democratic lobbyist Colonel Joe Rickey at Shoomaker's bar in Washington D.C. around 1883, this became hugely popular during Prohibition as it masked the harsh taste of bootleg gin with lime and soda.

Pro Tips

  • Colonel Joe Rickey's 1883 Washington DC creation — gin + lime + soda.
  • No sugar is traditional — just lime and soda with gin. Purists insist.
  • Use a dry gin (Beefeater, Tanqueray); flavored gins ruin the simplicity.
