Ingredients

  • Ruby Port2 oz
  • Dry Red Wine4 oz
  • Roasted Clove-Studded Orange0.5 piece
  • Sugar1 tbsp
  • Orange Peel1 twist

Method

  1. Roast clove-studded oranges at 350°F for 1 hour
  2. Squeeze the roasted oranges into a pot with wine, port, and sugar
  3. Warm over low heat 30 minutes
  4. Strain into warmed mug, garnish with orange twist

Pro Tips

  • Roast oranges an hour, not less — the sugars need to caramelize.
  • Ruby port is the traditional choice; tawny is too nutty. LBV works beautifully.
  • Dickens served it warm, not hot — no one's supposed to burn their tongue on Christmas.
