From Modern American Drinks by George J. Kappeler (1900). Original recipe: "One tablespoonful fine sugar, a little water, one slice lemon, two jiggers claret, one dash curaçoa, two dashes Madeira; mix well in thin punch-glass, add a slice cucumber, fill the glass with cold seltzer."

- Add sugar, lemon, madeira, and cucumber
