Ingredients

  • Cognac2 oz
  • Sugar Cube1 cube
  • Angostura Bitters2 dashes
  • Watersplash
  • Orange Peel1 twist

Method

  1. Place sugar cube in a cocktail glass
  2. Add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters
  3. Add a little water and muddle sugar
  4. Add 2 oz cognac
  5. Add ice and stir well
  6. Strain into chilled coupe
  7. Garnish with orange peel

  • Use a VSOP cognac, not VS — the age and complexity matter.
  • Orange peel, not lemon, for the cognac version — citrus pairs differently with brandy.
